An explosion is an outcome of an ignition of a mist and combustible gas when mixed with air during handling, processing and even when storage operations happen. A quick increase in pressure happens in the containing structure, and if it is of inadequate strength to continue the deflagration pressure and extensive harm to victims can occur.

A calculated area with Low burst pressure membranes fixed over a structure opening for protection is an Explosion vents. During deflagration, the vents offers a quick and limitless opening at a predetermined burst pressure (Pstat) permitting combustion gases to inflate and flow through the vent that is open. The essential relief area required to protect equipment or plant may be decided by using the recent standards of VDI 3673 or NFPA 68.

The appropriate vent for explosion may be chosen by comparing the catalog information with the conditions with respect to operation.

VSS™ (Vent-Saf Sanitary) and Types VSP™ (Vent-Saf Plus ) domed metal explosion vents with single section and integral gaskets. The dome is designed to fight vacuum issues.

Type VSE™ (Vent-Saf Economy) is a flat and single section metal explosion vent with essential gaskets.

Type EXP/DV™ is a round vaulted explosion vent of compound construction with essential gaskets. The EXP/DV vent has a stitch of laser cut pattern in the area where dome is present. A Teflon® liner shelters the slits that provide a seal. The burst pressure of vent is well controlled by the placement of the stitch pattern.

The Vent-Saf vents are offered in both rectangular and round types intended to mount on the structure to protect through a Safety Frame.

Burst Pressure [pstat]: Burst pressures are offered from 0.3 psig [0.021 barg] to 5 psig [0.35 barg] depending on configuration and vent size.

Vacuum Service: The VSS and VSP vents with domed constructions are designed for resisting high vacuum under cycling conditions omitting the necessity for vacuum support bars (attached to the inner safety Frame).

Service Capabilities: The VSP vent is tested with more than 1 million pressure cycles including vacuum to light positive pressure while holding its accuracy in the burst. The VSP vent exhibition of superior performance compared to conservative composite vents that exhaust before the range of 40,000 pressure cycles under corresponding test conditions. The type VSS vent has the same construction of the type VSP vent and is appropriate for cyclic or static vacuum service conditions only.


Burst Pressure [pstat]: Burst pressure is offered from 0.25 psig [0.017 barg] to 5 psig [0.35 barg] depending on size of the vent. The VSE vent will burst with same pressure in all directions.

Vacuum Service: The VSE should be installed Frame with vacuum support bars in a Safety to withstand back-pressure or vacuum.

Service Capabilities: The VSE is designed to serve every conditions including static or atmospheric pressure service conditions.

Round VSE VENTS: Two standard designs are offered to provide a one or four petal shape relief opening. The four-petal design provides high burst pressure.


Operating Pressure: The VSS, VSE and VSP vents are appropriate for positive pressures till 60% of the minimum burst pressure conditions. Though, under certain conditions till 80% of the minimum burst pressure is probable.

Vent Operation: The perimeter of the square or rectangular vents is laser cut on three sides [in a stitch pattern]. The fourth side behaves as a hinge, and holds the central section, to control fragmentation upon vent opening. The vent’s laser cut slits are sheltered by integral gaskets and sealing material to make sure the construction is leak tight and leak free.

Materials of Construction: The VSS, VSE and VSP explosion vents in 316SS* standard material are offered with a ranges of seal materials and gasket per the application.


For economy, half silicone sponge gaskets are offered as standard that shields half the flange to bolt holes. Full gaskets can be offered on demand/request. An alternative gasket material that includes Solid Viton® and Neoprene is also available.

*Vents are offered in alternative materials.

‘Silicone sponge component behaves as a seal/gasket and is fitted to both the sides of vent.


An alternate tolerance of +/-0.25 % may be provided if requested by the customer. The tag is fixed to the vent’s discharge side and will be marked with a minimum/maximum burst pressure ranges.

Rectangular and Round Explosion Vent Dimensions
The relief areas and dimensions of VSE and VSP vents in either round or rectangular designs are provided in Tables 1 and 2.

Safety Frames
Rectangular vents can be mounted in Safety Frames with lightweight angle profile. Round vents can also be mounted between standard weld neck flanges with DIN PN10 or ANSI 150 or in lightweight angle profile frames. Safety frames are offered in carbon steel or 304SS.

The frames are designed to either be bolted or welded on to the equipment for protection. If frames are produced by the user, bolt sizes details, spacing and dimensions must be provided to us prior to vent manufacture ensuring appropriate vent performance.

Operating Temperature
The standard explosion vent may be used in temperature ranges –40°F to 300°F [-40°C to 150°C], the aseptic/sanitary design –80°F to 450°F [-62°C to 232°C] and with solid silicone gaskets the RTV [High Temperature] seal –80°F to 500°F [-62°C to 260°C]. Alternate vent construction allows higher temperatures as well.

Sanitary/Aseptic Applications
Single-section stainless steel construction explosion vents with smooth internal surface finish are cavities free. Solid White silicone gaskets are offered and fitted to the vent flange and RTV sealing material which is FDA approved is applied to the vent perimeter for achieving an aseptic/sanitary construction.

Thermal Insulation
Thermally shielded vents using either ceramic material or urethane can be provided to prevent loss of heat or vent condensation. Insulation will also allow their usage during high temperature till 2000°F [1093°C]. The insulation is essential to the construction of panel, needing no added field installation. The thickness and type of the insulation material can be chosen suiting the operating temperature necessities. The added insulation should be considered when the burst pressure needs to be determined. A stainless-steel weather cover [optional] is available providing added protection of the insulation against ice, debris and rain.

Burst Sensor
The magnetic sensor (MBS™ Type) is available providing instant warning upon explosion burst to the vent. A magnetic activator is also fixed to the vent and a proximity switch is added to the safety frame. Burst warning vent is initiated when the current flowing across the sensor is disturbed sending an open circuit signal. The sensor is appropriate for usage in hazardous areas only if a suitable Zener barrier or power level is used to essentially meet safe requirements.

Type DV/EXP Vent is round domed and has compound construction laser cut in the done area in a stitch pattern. An PTFE/FEP liner covers the slits which behaves as a seal. The vent burst pressure is precisely controlled by the placement of the stitch pattern.

Burst Pressure (pstat): From 1 psig [0.07 barg] and above depending on size. Sizes: 6″ [150 mm] to 48″ [1200 mm] relief diameter.

Vacuum Service: The DV/EXP vent is built-in with a vacuum support resisting high vacuum.

Service Capabilities: The type DV/EXP vent exhibits best performance under pressure cycling conditions [vacuum till light positive pressure]

Burst Tolerance: The Burst Tolerance is +/- 0.5 psig [0.034 barg] of the minimal burst pressure. A tag is also fixed to the vent’s discharge side and marked with the appropriate burst pressure ranges. For instance: A vent which has nominal burst pressure of 3 psig [0.21 barg] will be tagged as minimum 2.5 psig [ 0.17 barg] – maximum 3.5 psig [0.24 barg].

Materials: the vacuum support and the burst control section are 316SS. The seat is made of Teflon. Additional top section and seal materials are also available.

Operating Pressure: The DV/EXP vents are appropriate for positive operating pressures till 80% of minimum burst pressure. For instance: A vent with a minimal burst pressure of 2.5 psig [0.17 barg] is appropriate for operating pressure till 2 psig [0.138 barg].

Installation: The DV/EXP vent can be installed among standard weldneck flanges in accord with ANSI 150, DIN PN 10 or directly on to the structure for protection. The vent should constantly be installed with a hold-down ring on the external side ensuring proper performance. The vents are delivered with gaskets which is installation ready.

Operating Temperature: -40°F [-40°C] to 500°F [260°C] Thermally insulated vents employing ceramic fiber material can be used for preventing loss of heat or vent condensation or preventing their usage in high temperature service up till 2000°F [1093°C].

Type LCV
The EXP/LCV vent is a rectangle flat vent of compound construction laser cut around the vent’s perimeter in a stitch pattern.

Vacuum Service: The LCV vent is built-in with a support for resisting vacuum.

Burst Pressure (pstat): 0.5 psig [0.035 barg] to 5 psig [0.35 barg], that depends on size, and in the similar sizes as types VSE and VSP vents.

Service Capabilities: The type EXP/LCV vent is intended for light pressure or static cycling duty.

Burst Tolerance: The Burst Tolerance is +/-0.25 psig [0.017 barg] of the minimal burst pressure. Tags are also marked with a minimum/maximum burst range.

Materials: The top section is made of 316SS with Teflon seal. Additional top section materials are also available.

Operating Pressure: The vents are appropriate for operating pressures till 60% of the minimal burst range.
